But while we talk about charging stations, range, and adoption, one important question often gets ignored:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What\u2019s actually powering India\u2019s EVs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer isn\u2019t just electricity, it\u2019s a group of materials called <strong>critical minerals<\/strong>, and India depends heavily on importing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Real_Backbone_of_EVs_Critical_Minerals\"><\/span><strong>The Real Backbone of EVs: Critical Minerals<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every EV battery relies on minerals like <strong>lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, and graphite<\/strong>. These are essential for building <strong>lithium-ion batteries<\/strong>, which power most electric vehicles today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s the reality in India:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lithium: <strong>100% import dependent<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cobalt: <strong>100% import dependent<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nickel: <strong>100% import dependent<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copper: <strong>majorly imported<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graphite: <strong>majorly imported<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means India\u2019s EV growth is directly tied to global supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even battery imports reflect this trend. India\u2019s <strong>lithium-ion battery imports surged from $384 million (2018\u201319) to $2.8 billion (2022\u201323)<\/strong>, a massive jump driven by rising EV demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indias_EV_Boom_Is_Real_But_So_Is_the_Dependency\"><\/span><strong>India\u2019s EV Boom Is Real, But So Is the Dependency<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India crossed <strong>2.3 million EVs in 2025<\/strong>, and the numbers are only going up. Government incentives, fuel costs, and awareness are pushing adoption forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s a catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India still imports <strong>70\u201380% of its lithium-ion battery cells<\/strong>, meaning a large part of the EV ecosystem is not fully localised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So while EV adoption is growing, <strong>control over the supply chain is still limited<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Global_Supply_Risks_Are_Increasing\"><\/span><strong>Global Supply Risks Are Increasing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge becomes bigger when global factors come into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, China, a major player in battery manufacturing, introduced export controls on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High-performance lithium-ion batteries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LFP cathode materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Artificial graphite anodes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These materials are critical for EV battery production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For India, this creates <strong>pricing pressure, supply uncertainty, and long-term risk<\/strong>, especially as EV demand continues to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"India_Is_Responding_But_It_Takes_Time\"><\/span><strong>India Is Responding, But It Takes Time<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reduce import dependence, India has started taking strategic steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One important move is the <strong>\u20b9169 crore India\u2013EU critical minerals partnership<\/strong>, aimed at securing stable access to key materials and strengthening supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the government launched the <strong>National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM)<\/strong> in 2025, focusing on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Domestic exploration and mining<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing and refining capacity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recovery of minerals from used products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here\u2019s the challenge:<br><strong>Mining takes years to scale.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the question is &#8211; what can India do in the near term?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Shift_That_Could_Change_Everything_EV_Battery_Recycling\"><\/span><strong>The Shift That Could Change Everything: EV Battery Recycling<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the story begins to shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, the EV conversation has been tied to imports and mining &#8211; sourcing lithium, cobalt, and nickel from across the world. But now, India is starting to look inward, unlocking value from what already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EV battery recycling is no longer a future idea, it\u2019s becoming a strategic priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The momentum is real:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u20b91,500 crore in planned investments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong national focus on recovering lithium, cobalt, and nickel at scale<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What this creates is more than efficiency, it builds a circular system. One where batteries don\u2019t end their life, they begin a second one. Materials flow back into the ecosystem instead of being constantly imported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as this ecosystem evolves, the focus naturally expands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s no longer just about producing vehicles, it\u2019s about building the infrastructure that supports their entire lifecycle.
