But recovering them depends on what happens next. Is the battery stored safely? Is it sent through a formal recycling channel? Can its movement and processing be documented?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For automobile manufacturers, battery producers, fleet operators, electronics companies and energy-storage businesses, these are not simply environmental questions. They affect compliance, workplace safety, asset accountability and access to secondary raw materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_short_answer\"><\/span>The short answer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old EV batteries in India should move through a formal system of collection, safe transportation, inspection, recycling and material recovery. They should not remain in warehouses indefinitely or enter untracked scrap channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Mobec, end-of-life lithium-ion batteries are not simply collected and passed on. Mobec processes and recycles them, giving the batteries and the materials inside them a clear and responsible route forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Lithium_Battery_Recycling_Matters_in_India\"><\/span>Why Lithium Battery Recycling Matters in India<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India\u2019s EV, electronics and energy-storage markets are growing quickly, and battery demand is rising with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/niti.gov.in\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-01\/Advancing-Circular-Economy-of-Waste-Electronic-and-Electrical-Equipment-Ewaste-and-Lithium-Ion-Batteries-in-India.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NITI Aayog\u2019s 2026 circular economy report<\/a>, India\u2019s lithium-ion battery demand is projected to increase from 16 GWh in 2023 to 248 GWh by 2035. The same report estimates that end-of-life lithium-ion battery availability could rise from 19 kilotonnes in 2023 to 233 kilotonnes by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are projections, not guaranteed outcomes. However, they point towards a clear reality: more batteries entering use today will eventually create a much larger stream of batteries requiring responsible end-of-life management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India\u2019s policy direction reflects the same concern. In April 2026, the Ministry of Mines announced that 58 companies had been declared eligible under the \u20b91,500 crore Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Critical Mineral Recycling. Together, these entities pledged around 850 KTPA of recycling capacity and approximately \u20b95,000 crore in investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to note that these figures represent pledged capacity and investment. They do not mean that the entire capacity is already operational. Project execution and the commencement of production form the next stage of the scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with that distinction, the message is significant. Battery waste is no longer being viewed only as a disposal problem. It is increasingly being recognised as a source of critical materials already present within the Indian economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_Every_Old_EV_Battery_Go_Straight_to_Recycling\"><\/span>Does Every Old EV Battery Go Straight to Recycling?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaching the end of service in an electric vehicle does not always mean that a battery has no remaining use. Depending on its condition, safety and residual capacity, a battery may first be evaluated for refurbishment or a second-life application, such as stationary energy storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the battery is damaged, severely degraded or unsuitable for further use, recycling becomes the responsible next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This assessment matters because batteries differ in their chemistry, design, age and usage history. A battery should not be repurposed simply because it can still hold some charge. It needs to be inspected and tested before a suitable end-of-life route is selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether a battery is reused or recycled, it should move through a documented and controlled system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Battery_Recycling_Begins_Before_the_Battery_Reaches_the_Plant\"><\/span>Battery Recycling Begins Before the Battery Reaches the Plant<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first stage of lithium-ion battery recycling is not shredding. It is responsible collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even after being removed from a vehicle or energy-storage system, a lithium-ion battery may retain electrical charge. If it is swollen, punctured, leaking or thermally damaged, it can create additional risks during storage and transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Businesses therefore need a process for identifying, isolating, documenting and moving end-of-life batteries safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful information may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Battery manufacturer and model<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Battery chemistry, where known<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pack or module configuration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous application<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical condition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Available service history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of damage or thermal stress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This information helps determine how the battery should be handled, transported and processed. It also creates greater traceability for internal audits and regulatory reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Do_Indias_Battery_Waste_Rules_Require\"><\/span>What Do India\u2019s Battery Waste Rules Require?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/moef.gov.in\/uploads\/pdf-uploads\/pdf_676567459cdfe9.16099796.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022<\/a> apply to different types of batteries, including electric-vehicle, portable, automotive and industrial batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rules introduced an Extended Producer Responsibility framework under which battery producers, including importers, are responsible for meeting prescribed collection, recycling or refurbishment obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The framework includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Registration of producers and recyclers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extended Producer Responsibility targets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycling and refurbishment certificates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reporting through the centralised EPR portal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of formal battery-waste channels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obligations relating to recycled materials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For businesses, this means that informal disposal is not a reliable battery-waste strategy. A battery leaving a company\u2019s premises should not mean that visibility over it ends. Formal processing and reliable documentation are essential parts of responsible battery management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Happens_During_Lithium-Ion_Battery_Recycling\"><\/span>What Happens During Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an old EV battery reaches a recycling facility, it does not immediately go into a shredder. Its condition, construction and chemistry must first be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Inspection_and_safe_handling\"><\/span>1. Inspection and safe handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battery is examined for swelling, leakage, impact damage or signs of thermal stress. Its remaining charge is assessed, and controlled discharge may be required before further processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This stage helps protect workers and equipment during dismantling and mechanical processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Sorting_and_dismantling\"><\/span>2. Depending on the recycling system, this may involve shredding, crushing, screening and physical separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These processes help separate material streams such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aluminium<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Steel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plastics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrode material<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Copper, aluminium and steel can be separated for further processing. It contains portions of the battery\u2019s cathode and anode materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its composition depends on the original battery chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NMC batteries<\/strong> may contain lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt and graphite.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>LFP batteries<\/strong> generally do not contain nickel or cobalt in the cathode but may contain lithium, iron, phosphate and graphite.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Battery packs across different chemistries can also provide recoverable copper, aluminium and steel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters because not every lithium-ion battery contains the same minerals or offers the same recovery value. The chemistry, condition and volume of the incoming batteries influence processing requirements and recycling economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Black_Mass_the_Final_Recycled_Product\"><\/span>Is Black Mass the Final Recycled Product?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Black mass is an important output of mechanical processing, but it is not automatically a battery-grade material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further processing is required to separate and recover individual materials. Depending on the facility, battery chemistry and intended outputs, recyclers may use different technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hydrometallurgical recycling<\/strong> uses controlled chemical processes to dissolve and separate selected materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pyrometallurgical recycling<\/strong> uses high-temperature treatment to recover certain metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Direct recycling<\/strong> is an emerging approach that aims to retain or restore parts of the cathode material instead of breaking every component down into its basic chemical form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each method has its own advantages, limitations and operating requirements. The appropriate route depends on the feedstock, chemistry, recovery objective, environmental controls and required output quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recovered materials must meet specific standards of purity, composition and consistency before they can be considered for battery manufacturing or other industrial applications. Producing black mass is therefore an important stage, but material recovery and refining are what move the recycling process closer to circularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Recycling_Is_Part_of_the_Battery_Supply_Chain\"><\/span>Why Recycling Is Part of the Battery Supply Chain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Battery recycling is often treated as the last task in a battery\u2019s life.
