The same problem appears when a delivery EV runs low midway through its route, a fleet vehicle gets stranded outside its depot or an EV operates in an area where charging stations are still limited.

India needs more fixed charging stations. But it also needs a way to cover the distance between the charger and the vehicle.

That is where portable EV charging in India becomes important.

India Is Adding Chargers, but Location Still Matters

India’s EV charging network is expanding steadily. According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, 67,657 EV chargers had been installed across states and Union Territories as of 7 August 2026. This includes 1,139 battery-swapping station chargers.

More chargers at homes, offices, commercial spaces, highways and transport hubs are making EV ownership easier. However, charging access is not only about the total number of chargers. It also depends on whether a suitable charger is available where and when a vehicle needs it.

A public charger may be occupied or temporarily unavailable. A driver may take an unexpected route or overestimate the remaining range. A commercial EV may not have enough charge to complete its operations and reach a station.

These situations will continue to occur even as the charging network grows. No fixed network can place a charger on every road, serve every temporary location or respond directly to every stranded vehicle.

What Happens When an EV Cannot Reach a Charger?

The most common answer today is towing.

However, towing an EV simply because its battery is low can add time, cost and inconvenience. For a commercial fleet, the consequences may extend beyond one stranded vehicle.

A delivery vehicle running out of charge can delay multiple orders. A service vehicle may miss its next appointment. The driver remains unavailable, and the wider operating schedule may be affected.

A portable EV charging solution provides another response: instead of moving the vehicle to the energy source, it moves the energy source to the vehicle.

The objective does not always have to be a complete recharge. During a roadside emergency, the vehicle may only need enough energy to safely reach the nearest charging station or return to its operating base.

This changes the question from “How do we tow this vehicle?” to “How quickly can we get it moving again?”

Portable EV Charging Goes Beyond Roadside Emergencies

Roadside EV rescue is the clearest use case, but portable EV charging can support several other requirements.

For delivery and last-mile fleets, a mobile charger can provide backup during active operations. If a vehicle runs low away from the depot, charging assistance can reach it without requiring a major route change.

Fleet operators can also move portable EV chargers between vehicles, depots, parking areas and operational zones according to demand. This can be useful when routes change regularly or permanent installation at every location is not practical.

Portable EV charging can also support:

Roadside-assistance services

Fleet depots and parking areas

Urban EV support hubs

Dealerships and service centres

Temporary events and exhibitions

Rural and remote locations

A fixed charger serves the location where it is installed. A portable EV charger can serve changing locations and requirements.

Mobec’s Portable Charging Solutions

Mobec has developed different portable EV charging solutions because a two-wheeler, a passenger car and a commercial fleet do not have the same charging needs.

The MOBEC SMART 5 is designed primarily for electric two-wheelers. Its compact mobile format and 5 kW power delivery make it relevant for delivery partners, daily commuters, two-wheeler fleets and roadside-assistance providers. It supports Type 2 and 3-pin connections, allowing rescue charging teams to respond to different two-wheeler requirements.

For larger EVs and more demanding rescue applications, the MOBEC SMART 8 combines an 8 kW output with a 7.2 kWh LFP battery pack. Its mobile design makes it suitable for roadside support, fleet operations, residential assistance and last-mile energy delivery.

For businesses requiring movable DC fast charging, the MOBEC MAC 30 offers a higher-power option. The 30 kW charger is built on wheels and supports CCS2-equipped electric cars, SUVs and commercial EVs. It can be repositioned within fleet depots, dealerships, parking facilities, service centres and event locations according to demand.

Together, these products address different levels of portable EV charging, from two-wheeler rescue to passenger EV support and movable commercial DC charging.

Building Charging Solutions for India

Mobec’s vision goes beyond developing individual chargers. It focuses on building practical charging solutions for the way EVs are actually used across India, from crowded cities and busy highways to fleet operations and remote locations.

Portable EV charging is an important part of this approach. It takes EV charging beyond fixed stations, making it more flexible, responsive and accessible wherever support is needed.

Beyond charging, Mobec is also working across energy storage and lithium-ion battery recycling to address India’s evolving energy needs.

The Strongest Charging Network Will Combine Fixed and Mobile Power

India will continue expanding its network of fixed charging stations, and these will remain essential. Homes and offices need convenient AC charging, highways and commercial hubs need dependable DC fast chargers, and fleets need infrastructure that fits their routes and operating schedules.

Yet not every charging need occurs near a fixed station. Routes change, delays happen, temporary sites emerge, and some vehicles may still fall short of the next available charger.

That is why the future of EV charging will not be entirely fixed or entirely mobile. It will bring both together.

Fixed stations will give India’s charging network the scale it needs. Portable EV charging will add the flexibility to respond wherever gaps remain.

India is creating more places where EVs can access power. Mobec is helping make power accessible wherever the EV needs it.

India now has 67,657 installed EV chargers.
