The next phase is about making that electricity more usable across different times, locations and patterns of demand.

That shift is putting energy storage systems (ESS) at the centre of India’s infrastructure conversation.

Storage is no longer relevant only when the grid goes down. It can help move electricity across time, improve the utilisation of renewable generation, provide flexibility to the power system and give consumers greater control over how and when they use electricity.

India’s Storage Requirement Is Scaling Rapidly

India’s current installed BESS base is still small compared with the capacity being planned.

As of June 30, 2026, India had 2.93 GW / 8.66 GWh of installed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity for projects above 1 MWh, according to the Ministry of Power.

The National Electricity Plan, however, projects a much larger requirement: 8.68 GW / 34 GWh of BESS by 2026-27 and 47.24 GW / 236 GWh by 2031-32. The projected BESS requirement for 2031-32 represents an estimated investment of around ₹3.49 lakh crore.

The significance is not simply the size of these numbers. It is what they indicate about the electricity system India is building.

Energy storage is increasingly being planned as part of the power system itself, alongside generation, transmission and distribution.

The Next Challenge Is Flexibility

Adding generation capacity is only one part of building a reliable electricity system.

As renewable generation expands, the value of being able to shift electricity across time increases. Electricity produced at one point may need to serve demand at another. Storage provides a mechanism for making that shift possible.

This is particularly relevant as India builds a larger renewable-energy base. The National Electricity Plan’s 2031-32 capacity mix includes 364.6 GW of solar PV and 121.9 GW of wind capacity, alongside 47.24 GW / 236.22 GWh of BESS in its planning scenario.

That makes storage more than an auxiliary technology. It becomes an infrastructure layer that can help the electricity system respond to changing supply and demand.

The same trend is visible globally. The International Energy Agency reports that 108 GW of new battery storage capacity was deployed worldwide in 2025, 40% more than in 2024. Around 80% of those additions were utility-scale, while behind-the-meter storage also continued to expand.

Storage Is Moving Closer to the Consumer

The growth of large-scale BESS is only one part of the opportunity.

Energy storage can also sit behind the meter, closer to where electricity is actually consumed. For homes and businesses, this changes the role of a battery from an emergency backup product to an energy-management asset.

A residential energy storage system can store electricity from compatible sources, supply selected loads when required and work alongside solar generation or the grid. Depending on the configuration, storage can support backup requirements, increase solar self-consumption and shift the use of stored electricity to a more suitable time.

This distributed layer matters because India’s energy infrastructure will not be built at a single scale.

Large BESS projects can support the wider electricity system. Smaller systems can give individual consumers more control over their own energy use. Together, they create a more flexible energy ecosystem.

Energy Storage at the Consumer Level

At the consumer level, energy storage brings the benefits of a more flexible electricity system into homes and other everyday applications.

Residential systems can store electricity when it is available and make it accessible when needed. This becomes particularly relevant for homes using solar power, where storage can help extend the use of generated electricity beyond the hours of peak solar generation.

For residential applications, Mobec Homez ESS is available in 3.6 kWh, 7.2 kWh, 9.6 kWh, 14.4 kWh and 29 kWh configurations. The system supports solar, grid and off-grid applications, with monitoring for battery status, charging and discharging, solar input and grid conditions.

The configuration can be matched to the household’s energy requirements and connected load, making storage a practical part of everyday energy management rather than something used only during power outages.

What This Means for India’s Energy Infrastructure

The importance of energy storage is ultimately about how India manages electricity, not simply how many batteries it installs.

At the grid level, storage can provide flexibility and help integrate renewable generation. At the consumer level, it can improve resilience and give households greater control over stored and self-generated electricity. Internationally, the IEA identifies battery storage as an increasingly important flexibility resource for systems with growing renewable generation.

India’s projected growth makes this particularly significant. The country is moving from an electricity system where generation capacity has traditionally been the primary focus towards one where generation, storage and flexibility increasingly have to be planned together.

That is the infrastructure opportunity ahead.

Building the Energy System Beyond Generation

India’s energy transition will require more than adding new sources of electricity.

It will require infrastructure that can store energy, shift its availability and make better use of the power already being generated.

That is why battery energy storage systems are becoming an increasingly important part of India’s energy roadmap, from utility-scale projects to residential solutions.

At Mobec, our focus is on bringing that storage capability closer to real-world energy needs.

Because the future of energy is not only about generating more power.
It is about having the right power available when it is needed.

India’s power sector is entering a different phase of its energy transition.
