India’s monsoon changes the conditions in which every outdoor system operates, and EV charging is no exception. As chargers become more common across homes, offices, parking facilities and public locations, one question continues to concern EV users: can an electric vehicle be charged safely when it is raining?
The answer is yes, provided the equipment is rated for outdoor use, correctly installed and free from damage. A modern EV charger is not simply a live electrical socket. It communicates with the vehicle, performs safety checks and confirms that the connection is secure before allowing power to flow.
That capability shows how far charging has evolved since the earliest electric vehicles.
EV Charging Has Evolved Beyond a Basic Connection
Early EVs charged slowly and lacked today’s standardised connectors, digital communication and public networks. Modern progress is therefore not limited to larger batteries and longer driving ranges. Charging itself has become more intelligent and controlled.
During a charging session, the charger checks the connection, confirms that the vehicle is ready and controls electricity delivery. Depending on the system, it may monitor current, voltage, temperature and faults. Charging can be interrupted if an unsafe condition is detected.
The Bureau of Indian Standards lists the IS 17017 series for electric vehicle conductive charging systems, covering AC and DC equipment, connectors, communication and electrical protection.
The BIS – Standards / Standard of the Month, covering DC electric vehicle supply equipment, added safety requirements and raised the ambient test temperature from the international standard’s 40°C to 55°C for Indian operating conditions.
What Makes Charging in Rain Possible?
Rain safety does not come from one feature. It depends on the charger enclosure, connector, cable, electrical protection, installation and site condition working together.
A correctly installed system does not allow power to flow merely because a connector has been inserted. The charger and vehicle must establish the required connection first. Protective systems can interrupt charging if a fault is detected.
Under PM E-DRIVE, supported public charging infrastructure must comply with the Ministry of Power’s 2024 guidelines. The scheme also specifies Indian charging standards for different vehicle categories and connector types.
Correct equipment selection, installation and maintenance still determine how safely a charger performs at a particular location.
An IP Rating Is Not a Rain Pass
People searching for a waterproof EV charger in India will usually encounter an IP rating. IP means Ingress Protection. According to the International Electrotechnical Commission, the first digit indicates protection against solid particles, while the second indicates protection against water.
An IP54-rated enclosure offers protection against limited dust ingress and water splashes. It does not mean the equipment can be submerged, exposed to flooding or cleaned with a high-pressure water jet. The rating must be considered alongside the manufacturer’s instructions.

India’s Charging Network Must Work Through the Monsoon
India had 52,718 public charging stations in July 2026, including 16,561 equipped with fast chargers for cars. The government has also allocated ₹2,000 crore under PM E-DRIVE for public EV charging infrastructure in cities and along highways, according to the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

An EV charger installed in India must handle more than its rated power. It must operate through heat, dust, humidity and seasonal rain. Weather readiness is therefore part of choosing the right EV charging equipment for the location.
Five Monsoon EV Charging Safety Checks
- Use outdoor-rated equipment installed by a qualified professional on a correctly protected electrical circuit.
- Inspect the cable, connector and vehicle port. Do not charge if you notice cracked insulation, bent pins, loose fittings or other damage.
- Avoid domestic extension boards, improvised adapters and exposed sockets. They are not substitutes for dedicated EV charging infrastructure.
- Keep the connector off the ground when not in use. Do not place it in standing water or clean the charger using a high-pressure water jet.
- Pause charging if the location is flooded, the equipment is damaged or the charger displays a fault. During severe lightning or unstable power, follow the manufacturers’ safety guidance.
The Better Question to Ask
Rain does not automatically make EV charging unsafe. Poor equipment selection, faulty installation, damage and waterlogging can.
The more useful question is: was the charger selected, installed and maintained for the conditions in which it will operate?
