India’s EV charging map is getting denser.
For an individual EV owner, that means a better chance of finding a charger near a workplace, shopping centre or highway stop. For a fleet operator, however, finding a charger is only half the answer.
The other half is more practical: How quickly can the vehicle return to the road?
A commercial EV waiting at a charger is not simply a parked vehicle. It could be a cab missing its next ride, a delivery vehicle falling behind schedule or a fleet asset sitting idle when it should be working.

More Chargers Are a Strong Beginning
In a written reply published by the Ministry of Heavy Industries through PIB on 21 July 2026, the government stated that India had 52,718 public EV charging stations, of which 16,561 were equipped with fast chargers for electric cars.
The expansion is continuing under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. In another Ministry of Heavy Industries reply published through PIB on 28 July 2026, the government stated that ₹2,000 crore had been allocated for public EV charging infrastructure. As of 1 July 2026, ₹689 crore had been approved for deploying 6,562 chargers through three oil marketing companies and nine states.
Fleets Operate on a Tighter Clock
Private cars spend a significant part of the day parked. This gives owners the flexibility to charge overnight or during longer stops.
Commercial vehicles rarely have that luxury.
Fleet schedules are built around routes, shifts, delivery windows and vehicle availability. If several vehicles return to a depot together, each may need to be ready for its next trip within a limited window. Slow or unpredictable charging can affect the entire schedule.
This is why DC fast charging for EV fleets is not only about convenience. It can influence how many trips a vehicle completes, how smoothly drivers change shifts and how effectively the fleet uses its available vehicles.
The objective is not always to keep every vehicle connected until it reaches 100%. In many cases, it is to provide enough energy for the next operational cycle and get the vehicle moving again.
What Does Faster Charging Actually Mean?
A DC fast charger supplies direct current to the battery, bypassing the lower-power conversion managed by the vehicle’s onboard AC charger. This allows significantly higher charging power.
However, a charger’s rated output does not mean that every vehicle will receive that level of power throughout the session.
Actual charging speed depends on the vehicle’s DC acceptance rate, battery capacity, existing state of charge, temperature and charging curve. Most EV batteries also reduce the amount of power they accept as they approach a higher state of charge.
A 120 kW rating represents the charger’s maximum available output, not a fixed rate delivered throughout every charging session. The vehicle’s battery, charging capability and state of charge determine how much power it can accept at any moment.
For compatible EVs, access to higher power can shorten charging stops. At a busy depot or commercial charging hub, this can help reduce waiting and allow the site to serve more vehicles during the day.
Fleet-Ready Charging Goes Beyond Power
A high output number may attract attention, but fleet operators need a complete and dependable charging system.
They need chargers that can operate consistently through long working hours. They need controlled access, visibility into charging sessions and the ability to identify issues without waiting for a driver to report them.
Connected charging is important here. OCPP-compatible chargers can communicate with a charge-point management system, enabling remote monitoring, session tracking and network-level control.
Multiple connectors provide further flexibility when vehicles arrive close together. Suitable protection against dust, weather, voltage fluctuations, temperature and electrical faults also becomes essential at outdoor and high-usage locations.
These features may appear less exciting than charging speed, but they often determine how useful a charger is in daily fleet operations.
Building for Different Charging Requirements

India needs more EV chargers, but numbers alone will not determine the strength of its charging network.
For fleets, the real test is whether a charger is available when needed, suitable for the vehicle, connected enough to be managed and dependable enough to support daily schedules.
