According to a PIB release dated 30 March 2026, India had 798 MWh of existing BESS capacity across projects above 1 MWh.

The two VGF schemes were launched in March 2024 and June 2025. The Ministry also reported 35.8 GWh of BESS capacity under construction.

Why storage is moving closer to the consumer

India’s storage framework has developed through separate measures. A December 2022 amendment recognised ESS as an integral part of the power system. A National Framework followed in September 2023. Another amendment in September 2025 permitted consumers to develop, own, lease or operate energy storage systems.

That widens the market beyond power companies. Businesses can use storage for continuity, while homes with rooftop solar can retain more of the electricity they generate. Facilities with an unstable grid can reduce their dependence on conventional generators.

Known as behind-the-meter storage, these systems give consumers greater control over when electricity is stored and used.
